The DS-2019 Form is the certificate of eligibility which grants you access to a J-1 Visa Interview. Each DS-2019 Form is registered through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) of the U.S. Department of State. Without a DS-2019 form, your VISA application will be rejected. When you attend your VISA interview you have to submit the original copy of the form along with the rest of your documents. Having a DS-2019 is not a guarantee that you will receive a VISA. It simply serves as proof that a Department of State designated visa sponsor supports your visa application.
The DS-2019 Form contains information about the participant, the sponsor, the employer, the duration of the program, and the type of the program. After the DS-2019 expires, the participant in the program is allowed an additional 30-day stay in the United States, during which he or she can travel around the country.
